Body Art Facility Inspector Training Background

Most body art regulations in the U.S. lack consistency across procedures and struggle to keep pace with evolving industry practices. Due to this variation and limited training opportunities, environmental health specialists have expressed a clear need for additional education before conducting inspections in body art facilities. TikTok³ÉÈ˰æ’s 2021 Body Art Facility Inspection Training Needs Assessment confirmed this gap, revealing that only 49% of body art facility inspectors felt qualified to perform inspections. To address this, we developed a training specifically designed for environmental health professionals who are new to body art regulation.

Working in collaboration with both industry and regulatory experts, we launched this course in 2022 as an in-person pilot at our Annual Educational Conference (AEC). Based on feedback from the pilot, we refined the course content and added engaging materials such as mock inspection and body art procedure videos, interactive activities, job aids, and body art photos. The updated versions were delivered again at the 2023 and 2024 AECs.

To expand access and meet the needs of professionals across the country, this training is now available virtually and asynchronously via our online Learning Management System (LMS). Participants can complete the course over two half-days on Zoom or on their own schedule while accessing the same high-quality content.
